Heteraletes was named by Peterson (1931). It is not extant. Its type is Heteraletes leotanus.
It was synonymized subjectively with Dilophodon by Hough (1955), Gazin (1956), Radinsky (1963), Black (1979) and Prothero and Schoch (1989).
It was assigned to Tapiroidea by Peterson (1931) and Colbert and Schoch (1998); and to Tapiridae by Colbert (2005).
