Taxonomy

Aceratherium was named by Kaup (1834).

It was corrected as Acerotherium by Lydekker (1876).

It was assigned to Perissodactyla by Owen (1848) and Lydekker (1876); to Elasmotheriinae by Hay (1902); to Rhinocerotidae by Lambe (1908) and Carroll (1988); to Aceratheriinae by Prothero and Schoch (1989) and Cerdeno (1992); to Aceratherini by Kaya and Heissig (2001); and to Aceratheriini by Antoine et al. (2010).
