Anthracobune was named by Pilgrim (1940).
It was assigned to Anthracotheriidae by Pilgrim (1940); to Dichobunidae by Dehm and Oettingen-Spielberg (1958); to Moeritheriidae by West (1980); to Proboscidea by Shoshani and Tassy (1996); to Tethytheria by Shoshani and Tassy (2005); and to Anthracobunidae by Carroll (1988), Kumar (1991), McKenna and Bell (1997), Rose et al. (2014), Cooper et al. (2014) and Rose et al. (2020).
It was assigned to Anthracotheriidae by Pilgrim (1940); to Dichobunidae by Dehm and Oettingen-Spielberg (1958); to Moeritheriidae by West (1980); to Proboscidea by Shoshani and Tassy (1996); to Tethytheria by Shoshani and Tassy (2005); and to Anthracobunidae by Carroll (1988), Kumar (1991), McKenna and Bell (1997), Rose et al.
