Taxonomy
Hoplophorus was named by Lund (1838).

It was synonymized subjectively with Glyptodon by Ameghino (1889); it was synonymized subjectively with Sclerocalyptus by Brown (1912).

It was assigned to Glyptodontidae by Cope (1889) and Carroll (1988); to Hoplophorini by Hoffstetter (1958) and McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Panochthidae by Fernicola (2008).
