Taxonomy
Nothrotherium was named by Lydekker (1889). It is not extant. Its type is Coelodon maquinense. It is the type genus of Nothrotheriinae.
It was assigned to Megatheriidae by Lydekker (1894) and Carroll (1988); to Nothrotheriidae by Amson et al. (2017); and to Nothrotheriinae by Hay (1930), Hoffstetter (1954) and Varela et al. (2019).
