Taxonomy
Alticamelus priscus was named by Matthew and Cook (1909). Its type locality is Merychippus Draw, which is in a Hemingfordian terrestrial horizon in the Sheep Creek Formation of Nebraska.
It was recombined as Aepycamelus priscus by Macdonald (1956).
