Calops was named by Marsh (1894). Its type is Calops cristatus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Protoceras by Frick (1937), Simpson (1945) and Patton and Taylor (1973).

It was assigned to Protoceratinae by Hay (1902); and to Protoceratidae by Scott (1940).
