Diacodon puercensis was named by Matthew (1918) [as type of "subgenus" Palaeolestes]. It is the type species of Prodiacodon.
It was recombined as Prodiacodon puercensis by Matthew (1929), Matthew (1937), Gazin (1949), Novacek (1977), Novacek (1982) and Rose (1999).
