Gelenoptron was named by Conway Morris (1993) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm mMid-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1131].

It was assigned to Hydroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Chondrophorina by Conway Morris (1993) and Bambach et al. (2007).
