Waeringoscorpio was named by Størmer (1970) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 656]. Its type is Waeringoscorpio hefteri.
It was assigned to Waeringoscorpionidae by Størmer (1970), Duplicate (1970) and Kjellesvig-Waering (1986); to Scorpionida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Proscorpiidae by Poschmann et al. (2008) and Dunlop et al. (2013).
