Hyopsodus speirianus was named by Cope (1880). It is the type species of Haplomylus.
It was recombined as Microsyops speirianus by Cope (1881), Osborn (1902) and Hay (1902); it was recombined as Haplomylus speirianus by Matthew (1915), Hay (1930), Simpson (1937), Gazin (1968), Gingerich (1980) and Robinson and Williams (1997).
