D. H. Erwin et al. 2011 | Rangeomorphs are a monophyletic clade of modular organisms composed of unique self-similar leaf-like structures termed frondlets. These frondlets consist of a repetitive branching pattern that is identical throughout at least three orders of branching. At least two separate branching architectures represent separate clades within the rangeomorphs: Charnia-type and Rangea-Type (93). In many species, modular units are acquired early in ontogeny and inflate in size with growth. The repeated branching of the rangeomorph frondlet results in a significant increase in surface area, which was necessary for osmotrophy. |
