Neohyaenodon was named by Thorpe (1922).

It was synonymized subjectively with Hyaenodon by Scott and Jepsen (1936), Van Valen (1966), Van Valen (1967), Mellett (1977), Gustafson (1986) and Gunnell (1998).

It was assigned to Hyaenodontidae by Thorpe (1922).
