Microsyops elegans

Taxonomy

Limnotherium elegans was named by Marsh (1871). Its type specimen is YPM 11794, a mandible (fragment of left ramus with P4-M2), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Grizzly Buttes, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Bridger Formation of Wyoming.

It was recombined as Notharctus elegans by Osborn (1902); it was recombined as Microsyops elegans by Leidy (1873), Hay (1902), Wortman (1903), Hay (1930), Gazin (1958), Szalay (1969), Gazin (1976) and Gunnell (1989).

Synonyms

Bathrodon typus was named by Marsh (1872).

It was recombined as Microsyops typus by Osborn (1902) and Hay (1930); it was synonymized subjectively with Microsyops gracilis by Wortman (1903); it was synonymized subjectively with Microsyops elegans by Szalay (1969) and Gunnell (1989).
Mesacodon speciosus was named by Marsh (1872).

It was recombined as Microsyops speciosus by Osborn (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Microsyops elegans by Wortman (1903), Hay (1930), Szalay (1969) and Gunnell (1989).
Microsyops gracilis was named by Leidy (1872) [genotype]. It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Microsyops elegans by Leidy (1873), Szalay (1969) and Gunnell (1989).
Palaeacodon verus was named by Leidy (1872). It is not extant.

It was recombined as Microsyops verus by Osborn (1902) and Hay (1930); it was synonymized subjectively with Microsyops elegans by Szalay (1969), Gazin (1976) and Gunnell (1989).
