Stypolophus bicuspis was named by Cope (1880).

It was recombined as Ictops bicuspis by Cope (1881); it was recombined as Diacodon bicuspis by Matthew (1918), Hay (1930) and Gazin (1949); it was recombined as Palaeictops bicuspis by Matthew (1899), Hay (1902), Gazin (1956), Gazin (1976), Novacek (1977), Novacek (1982), Gunnell (1998) and Velazco and Novacek (2016).
