Taxonomy
Geomys townsendii was named by Bachman (1839). It is extant.
It was synonymized subjectively with Thomomys umbrinus by Hall (1981); it was recombined as Thomomys townsendii by Thaeler (1968), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Patton et al. (1984), Patton and Smith (1989), Rogers (1991) and Wilson and Reeder (1993).
