Vulpavus australis was named by Matthew and Granger (1915).

Synonyms

Vulpavus asius was named by Gazin (1952). Its type locality is La Barge, which is in a Wasatchian terrestrial mudstone in the Wasatch Formation of Wyoming.

It was synonymized subjectively with Vulpavus australis by Guthrie (1971).
