Xiaosaurus was named by Dong and Tang (1983).

It was considered a nomen dubium by Sereno (1991); it was considered a nomen dubium by Norman et al. (2004).

It was assigned to Hypsilophodontidae by Dong and Tang (1983) and Dong (1992); to Dinosauria by Knoll (1999); to Ornithischia by Barrett et al. (2005); and to Fabrosauridae by Peng (1992), Dong (1997), Peng et al. (2005) and Li et al. (2011).
