Natchitochia jonesi
Taxonomy
Natchitochia jonesi was named by Uhen (1998). Its type specimen is USNM 16805, a partial skeleton (vertebrae), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Natchitoches SH 478, which is in a Bartonian marine sandstone in the Cook Mountain Formation of Louisiana.

Uhen 2014 | The vertebrae of Natchitochia jonesi are 10%–25% larger in linear dimensions than the largest vertebrae of all other protocetids for which corresponding vertebrae are known (see Fig. 1 for comparison and Appendix 1 for measurements). The vertebrae of N. jonesi also lack the ventral keel seen in those vertebrae assigned to Pappocetus, and the ribs are smaller and more gracile than the ribs assigned to Pappocetus (Hal- stead and Middleton 1974). Natchitochia jonesi differs from Georgiacetus vogtlensis in the in that N. jonesi possesses a first sacral vertebra bearing a large auricular surface on S1 that articulates with the innominate, as well as small, triangular articular surfaces on the posterior margin of the transverse process that articulates with the second sacral vertebra. G. vogtlensis lacks both of these features. |
