Steganoposaurus was named by Branson and Mehl (1932). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Steganoposaurus belli.

It was assigned to Tetrapoda by Branson and Mehl (1932); to Captorhinomorpha by Haubold (1971); and to Cotylosauria by Haubold (1974).
