Huayangosaurinae was named by Dong et al. (1982). Its type is Huayangosaurus.

It was assigned to Stegosauridae by Dong et al. (1982), Zhou (1983), Zhou (1986), Dong (1990), Dong (1992) and Peng et al. (2005).

Peng et al. 2005	Small to medium sized stegosaur diagnosed by well developed jugal; 2~3 supraorbitals; presence of premaxillary teeth; presence of antorbital vacuity; mandible with external mandibular fenestra and prominent coronoid eminence; low dorsal neural arches; sacral foramens not enclosed; femur a little longer than humerus with undeveloped fourth trochanter; distal ends of tibia and fibula fused with astragalus and calcaneum; pedal digit II and III with 3 phalanges; dermal plates varied in shape.
