Abrosaurus was named by Ouyang (1989). Its type is Abrosaurus dongpoensis.
It was assigned to Cetiosaurinae by Ouyang (1989); to Macronaria by Upchurch et al. (2004); to Mamenchisauridae by Peng et al. (2005); to Camarasauromorpha by Moser et al. (2006); and to Camarasauridae by Zhang and Chen (1996) and Li et al. (2010).
