Stauromatidium was named by Pedder and Oliver (1982) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi Sepkoski's reference number: 1240]. It is the type genus of Stauromatidiidae.

It was assigned to Stauromatidiidae by Pedder and Oliver (1982); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
