Austrosqualodon was named by Climo and Baker (1972) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u Sepkoski's reference number: 746,1022]. It was considered monophyletic by Fordyce (1978) and Muizon (1987).
It was corrected as Australosqualodon by Whitmore and Sanders (1977); it was considered a nomen dubium by Fordyce and de Muizon (2001); it was misspelled as Australosqualodon by Sepkoski (2002) and Fordyce and Roberts (2009).
It was assigned to Odontoceti by Fordyce (1978); to Squalodontoidea by Fordyce (1980) and McKenna and Bell (1997); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Squalodontidae by Climo and Baker (1972), Keyes (1973), Whitmore and Sanders (1977), Fordyce (1982), Muizon (1987), Carroll (1988) and Fordyce and Roberts (2009).
