Oenonites was named by Hinde (1879) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llde-u Tr m Sepkoski's reference number: 366,769].

It was assigned to Eunicea by Eriksson (1997); to Eunicemorpha by Sepkoski (2002); and to Polychaetaspidae by Hints et al. (2015).
