Dinosauropodes was named by Douglass (1932) [named by Douglass in this paper]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Dinosauropodes magrawii.

It was assigned to Dinosauria by Strevell (1932); to Ornithischia by Kuhn (1958); and to Ornithopoda by Kuhn (1963).
