Taxonomy
Lantanotherium was named by Filhol (1888) [unjustified emendation of Lantanotherium]. Its type is Erinaceus sansaniensis.

It was assigned to Galericini by Lopatin (2006) and Gunnell et al. (2008); to Erinaceidae by Filhol (1888), Rich (1981), Gould (1995) and Prieto et al. (2015); to Galericinae by Ziegler (2006) and Korth and Evander (2016); and to Echinosoricini by Van Valen (1967) and Crespo et al. (2020).
