Geography
Country:Russian Federation State/province:Rostovskaya Oblast'
Coordinates: 47.2° North, 39.7° East (view map)
Paleocoordinates:47.4° North, 39.4° East
Basis of coordinate:based on nearby landmark
Time
Period:Neogene Epoch:Pliocene
10 m.y. bin:Cenozoic 6
Key time interval:Pliocene
Age range of interval:5.33300 - 2.58000 m.y. ago
Stratigraphy
Formation:Khapry
Stratigraphic resolution:formation
Stratigraphy comments: Late Pliocene, Middle Villafranchian, lower part of MN17 (based on small mammals associated with macrofauna in the lowest levels).
Bones largely found in the lower part of the alluvial sequence, but some isolated specimens occur higher in the sequence at Liventsovka. Several beds with small mammals occur within the 20m thick sequence.
Liventsovka was a quarry.
Lithology and environment
Lithology description: Sand-shingle deposits.
Environment:fluvial-deltaic indet.
Geology comments: Sand-shingle deposits along the coastal zone of the Sea of Azov. 'They unconformably overlie the marine Miocene sediments and correspond to alluvium of an ancient 30-40m terrace of the Don River.'
Taphonomy
Size of fossils:macrofossils,mesofossils
Collection methods and comments
Collection methods:field collection
Reason for describing collection:taxonomic analysis
Collection method comments: Collecting began in 1932, from a quarry.
Specimens held at Rostov State University, Rostov-on-Don (RGU), Vernadskii State Geological Museum (GGM), Rostov Regional Museum (RRM) and the Geological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences (GIN).
bpnes are 'strongly mineralised'.
Taxonomic list comments:small from of Libralces.
