Stratigraphy
Local section:Siemien
Stratigraphic resolution:group of beds
Stratigraphy comments: No lithostratigraphic unit given in text or found in literature search. Deposits are however less than 10 m thick, overlain by Quaternary sands. Assigned to Bartonian on the basis of similarity of faunal assemblage to Bartonian of England. Furthermore, analysis of planktonic foraminifers shows the unit to be the Globigerapsis semiinvolute Zone, that is in the lower part of the Upper Eocene, and on the basis of coccoliths to be in the Discoaster nodifer biozone, that is uppermost Middle and lowermost Upper Eocene.
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology:glauconitic,pebbly sandstone
Secondary lithology:phosphatic sandstone
Includes fossils?Y
Includes fossils?Y
Lithology description: The basal part of the series is foirmed by quartz-glauconitic sands with quartz and lydite pebbles. Upwards the content of gravel decreases and numerous phosphatic nodules appear. The content of calcium and marl in these sands is variable; in places intercalations of limestone are found. The deposit becomes devoid of calcium, silty, clay-sandy and clayey and gaizes appear towards the top of the unit.
Environment:offshore
Glacial or sequence phase:transgressive
Geology comments: The Upper Eocene sequence is represented by transgressive marine series. Most taxa occupy neritic and littoral and warm-temperate conditions. Numerous corals suggest normal salinity. Probably accumulaed in 10-90 m of water depth.
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation:body,original aragonite,original calcite
Size of fossils:macrofossils
Preservation of anatomical detail:poor
Collection methods and comments
Collection excludes:all microfossils
Collection methods:field collection
Reason for describing collection:taxonomic analysis
Collection method comments: Macrofauna are housed in the Geological Instiutute (IG) of Poland.
Taxonomic list comments:Exhaustive for bivalvia and apparently complete for gastropods (although this is a meagre fauna). Includes all macrofossils.
