Geography
Country:United States State/province:Washington County:Lewis
Coordinates: 46.4° North, 123.0° West (view map)
Paleocoordinates:47.3° North, 109.4° West
Basis of coordinate:based on nearby landmark
Geographic resolution:outcrop
Time
Period:Paleogene Epoch:Eocene
Stage:Bartonian 10 m.y. bin:Cenozoic 3
Key time interval:Bartonian
Age range of interval:41.20000 - 37.71000 m.y. ago
Stratigraphy
Formation:Cowlitz
Local order:bottom to top
Stratigraphic resolution:bed
Stratigraphy comments: Calcareous nannoplankton most precisely age this unit, placing the Cowlitz fauna in nannoplankton zones NP16 and NP17 (Martini, 1971) and upper CP14 (Oklada and Bukry, 1980), which correlates to the late middle Eocene (40-43 Ma) age (Berggren et al., 1992). Molluscan biostratigraphy suggests a "Tejon" stage age or "Cowlitz-Coaldeo" molluscan stage = Middle Eocene. Collection is assigned to the Bartonian=late Middle Eocene. Collection is from about 15m and 30m above Acutostrea assemblage.
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology:medium,shelly/skeletal,green lithified sandstone
Includes fossils?Y
Lithology description: Densely fossiliferous sandstone; dark-green, medium-grained, basalt-lithic fragments
Environment:transition zone/lower shoreface
Geology comments: Sandy, inner-neritic environment, shallower than 50 m, not indicative of brackish water.
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation:cast,mold/impression
Size of fossils:macrofossils
Preservation of anatomical detail:medium
Articulated whole bodies:some
Temporal resolution:time-averaged
Spatial resolution:autochthonous
Collection methods and comments
Collection methods:bulk,field collection
Collection size:208 specimens
Reason for describing collection:paleoecologic analysis
Museum repositories:UMMP
Collection method comments: Collection is presumably reposited in the Museum of Paleontology, University of California collections. Collected in July of 1978 and 1979. Locality has been and continues to be obscured following the May 1980 Mount St Helen's eruption and subsequent landslides and log jams. Collection is more or less equivalent to Weaver's (1937) localities UW 342 and 34.
Taxonomic list comments:Identified by E. Nesbitt, based on figures and descriptions in Dickerson (1914, 1915), and Weaver (1943), and Squires (1984, 1989), and there are anumber of new, undescribed species. Specimen counts are based on the greater number of left and right valves for bivalves.
