Paleocoordinates: | 35.1° North, 76.5° West
Basis of coordinate: | based on nearby landmark
Geographic resolution: | outcrop |
Time
Period: | Quaternary | Epoch: | Pleistocene |
10 m.y. bin: | Cenozoic 6 | ||
Key time interval: | Early/Lower Pleistocene
Age range of interval: | 2.58000 - 0.77400 m.y. ago |
Stratigraphy
Formation: | James City | ||||
Local section: | Johnson Point | Local bed: | 1.8 m
Local order: | top to bottom
Stratigraphic resolution: | bed
Stratigraphy comments: Basinal/regional section name: Neuse River.
Sample 3 collected from ~1.8 m below the top of the section, ~0.6 m below Sample 4, and ~0.6 m below Sample 2. James City Fm was regarded as Pliocene by DuBar and Solliday (1963), though more recent biostratigraphy indicates an Early Pleistocene age (DuBar et al. 1974, Blackwelder 1981, McCartan et al. 1982). The James City Fm is considered time equivalent or slightly younger than the Waccamaw Fm of N. and S. Carolina., and with the Caloosahatchee Fm of Florida. Cronin et a. (1984) proposed an age of 1.3-0.7 Ma for the formation. |
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: | coarse,shelly/skeletal,gray,blue unlithified sandy mudstone |
Lithology description: Medium bluish gray to olive gray, slightly indurated, shelly coarse sandy mudstone to siltstone containing shelly interbeds (presumably sampled).
Environment: | estuary/bay |
Geology comments: Shallow subtropical marine bay having fairly open communication with the ocean. |
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation: | body,original aragonite,original calcite |
Size of fossils: | macrofossils |
Preservation of anatomical detail: | excellent |
Articulated whole bodies: | some |
Spatial resolution: | autochthonous |
Collection methods and comments
Collection methods: | bulk,field collection |
Reason for describing collection: | paleoecologic analysis |
Collection method comments: Counts are specimen tallies corrected to estimate numbers of individual organisms (e.g. for bivalves 1 beak fragment = 1/2 individual). Because of moder of preservation (e.g. dismembered zoaria of fragile bryozoans), abundance of certain organisms given as: A, abundant; C, common; R, rare. Repository unknown, possibly at Humboldt State University.
Taxonomic list comments:Exhaustive for bulk samples, which should be very representative given that they have sample sizes in excess of 1-2,000 specimens. Nomenclature modern. |
