Stratigraphy comments: SOURCE: collecton from 66.78-66.84 m (219.1-219.3 ft) in core. STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: Overlies the St Mary's Fm (early Late Miocene), and in turn is overlain by the Yorktown Fm. Both contacts are unconformable. The height of contact between Pliocene Yorktown Fm and the Eastover Fm is 23.3 m (76.3 ft). BIOSTRATIGRAPHY: NN 11 calcareous nannofossil zone, D9-D10 dinoflagellate zone and M7-M8 molluscan zone. |
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: | shelly/skeletal unlithified argillaceous,silty,sandy sandstone |
Includes fossils? | Y |
Lithology description: GENERAL LITHOLOGY: Shelly, sandy basal lag and consists of clayey, silty sands.
Environment: | coastal indet. |
Geology comments: DEPTH: relatively shallow, marine shelf with diverse substrates. SALINITY: no specific data reported, apparently normal marine conditions. THERMAL TOLERANCES: subtropical-warm-temperate. PAELOBIOGEOGRAPHY: no specific data reported. |
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation: | body |
Size of fossils: | macrofossils |
Collection methods and comments
Collection methods: | core,field collection |
Reason for describing collection: | taxonomic analysis |
Museum repositories: | USNM |
Collection method comments: SOURCE: occurrences of large recognizable species and any molluscan remains were noted. Fossiliferous samples were collected at selected intervals for precessing and further examination. Samples were washed, the fraction >850 um was retained, and molluscan fauna specimens recovered were sorted and identified. Generic assignments for extant groups were updated on the basis of Turgeon et al. (1998). COLLECTORS: Collected by NASA-USGS. REPOSITORIES: presumably reposited in USGS and USNM collections.
Taxonomic list comments:COVERAGE: Not exhaustive, but detailed considering limited material available from core. IDENTIFIED: presumably identified by L. Wingard (USGS). NOMENCLATURE: appears to be fairly modern. |
