Paleocoordinates:9.1° North, 78.4° West
Basis of coordinate:based on nearby landmark
Geographic resolution:small collection
Time
Period:Neogene Epoch:Miocene
Stage:Tortonian 10 m.y. bin:Cenozoic 6
Key time interval:Tortonian
Age range of interval:11.63000 - 7.24600 m.y. ago

Stratigraphy
Formation:Gatun Member:lower Gatun
Stratigraphic resolution:bed
Stratigraphy comments: STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: The Gatun Fm rests unconformably on formations of different ages in different parts of the Panama Canal Basin. To the east of Colon, the Gatun Fm rests nonconformably on unamed Cretaceous volcanics. To the west of Colon, including several islands in Lake Gatun, the Gatun Fm rests with angular unconformity on the upper Oligocene Caimito Fm. AGE: Late Miocene, on the basis of microfossil biostratigraphy (see Collins and Coates, 1999). AGE: Tortonian based on more recent dating (Hendy, 2012). Sr dating for nearby sections indicates an age of approximately 11.5 Ma (Hendy, unpublished data).
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: poorly lithified "siliciclastic"
Includes fossils?Y
Includes fossils?Y
Lithology description: LITHOLOGY: Not recorded, but certainly silciclastic. LITHIFICATION: Unlithified, on the basis of observation of specimens.

Geology comments: ENVIRONMENT: from Collins et al. (1999), open, inner neritic.
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation:body
Size of fossils:macrofossils
