Geography
Country:Argentina State/province:Chubut
Coordinates: 45.5° South, 69.2° West (view map)
Paleocoordinates:48.0° South, 55.9° West
Basis of coordinate:based on nearby landmark
Geographic resolution:small collection
Time
Period:Cretaceous Epoch:Late/Upper Cretaceous
Key time interval:Campanian - Maastrichtian
Age range of interval:83.60000 - 66.00000 m.y. ago
Stratigraphy
Geological group:Chubut Formation:Lago Colhué Huapi
Stratigraphic resolution:bed
Stratigraphy comments: supposedly 100 m below the "Notostylops beds"; sometimes listed as Castillo Fm.

Probably upper member of the Bajo Barreal Formation, Chubut Group (Bonaparte and Gasparini, 1979); Campanian–?Maastrichtian (Late Cretaceous) (Casal et al., 2007). Based on outcrops in the western part of the San Jorge Basin, the Bajo Barreal Formation is generally considered middle Cenomanian–Turonian in age (Bridge et al., 2000; Lamanna et al., 2002); however, recent evidence indicates that the more easterly exposures in the less well-studied Rio Chico area are much younger, i.e., Campanian–?Maastrichtian (Casal et al., 2007) (Mannion and Otero, 2012).
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: not reported
Environment:terrestrial indet.
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation:body
Degree of concentration:dispersed
Size of fossils:macrofossils
Associated major elements:many
Fragmentation:occasional
Temporal resolution:snapshot
Collection methods and comments
Collection methods:selective quarrying,surface (in situ),mechanical,field collection
Reason for describing collection:taxonomic analysis
Museum repositories:MLP
Collectors:C. Ameghino Collection dates:1889
Collection method comments: This is probably the same area prospected by the FMNH but no collections were made; they found evidence of prior work, including tools from Sheffield, England and ordered piles of dinosaur bones. The forelimb of Argyrosaurus seems to have come from a fairly complete skeleton that was not entirely excavated.
