Age range of interval:15.98000 - 11.63000 m.y. ago
Stratigraphy
Formation:Grand Bay
Local section:Point St Hilaire
Stratigraphic resolution:bed
Stratigraphy comments: The principal, nominal sedimentary units of the mid-Tertiary succession of Carriacou are the Belmont Formation (lower Miocene), Kendeace Formation (lower Miocene), Carriacou Formation (middle Miocene) and Grand Bay Formation (middle Miocene). The collection originates from sandy facies of the Grand Bay Fm. Jung (1971) assigns this a Middle Miocene age based on faunal affinities with other circum-Caribbean units.
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: poorly lithified tuff
Includes fossils?Y
Lithology description: Tuffaceous facies. From specimens presented in photgraphic plates most material from Carriacou appears to be from poorly-lithified as opposed to cemented, or unconsolidated sediments. No information provided in text
Environment:transition zone/lower shoreface
Geology comments: Most collections of the Grand Bay Fm may have lived in inner shelf depths of 20-50 m, although some may be deeper, or at least have had shallow-water fauna transported offshore. The fauna of the tuffaceous facies appears to have been deposited in slightly shallower water and is here assigned a "transition zone/lw shoreface" environment.
