Maastrichtian chalk (Stevns Klint) fauna (Cretaceous of Denmark)

Also known as Maastrichtian chalk (Denmark) fauna

Where: Denmark (57.0° N, 9.7° E: paleocoordinates 49.2° N, 8.5° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Maastrichtian chalk Formation, Maastrichtian (72.1 - 66.0 Ma)

• Maastrichtian chalk, cut by hardground. Dated by overlying Danian Fish Clay (P0 foraminiferal zone). Further overlying units include Cerithium Limestone (P0-P1a foraminiferal zone)

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: reef, buildup or bioherm; lithified, hardground carbonate

• "terminal Maastrichtian chalk was characterized by low-carbonate bioherms with shallow interbiohermal basins.....Bioherms were generated by relatively dense coverage of bryozoans, acting as sediment traps for mainly planktonic coccolithic ooze. In the basins between the bioherms, coccolithic ooze and bryzoan debris dominated."
• "biohermal chalk", presence of reworked chalk pebbles in upper units indicates "early lithification" of Maastrichtian chalk.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: mold/impression, original aragonite, original calcite, original silica, replaced with calcite

Collection methods: bulk,

• Some bulk samples processed in the field, remeaning material processed in laboratory. Lab preparation involved "drying, weighing and hammering samples into small prieces. Each piece examined under microscope in search of molds."
