Al Sceleidima Member, Ar Rajmah Formation (Miocene of Libya)

Where: Libya (31.7° N, 20.5° E: paleocoordinates 31.0° N, 19.7° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• basin-level geographic resolution

When: Al Sceleidima Member (Ar Rajmah Formation), Middle Miocene (16.0 - 11.6 Ma)

• LITHOSTRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONSHIPS: From the Al Sceleidima Member (formely formation of Francis and Issawi, 1977), which overlies the Benghazi Mbr (Middle Miocene) and is overlain by the Msus Mbr (Middle Miocene) of the Ar Rajmah Fm. AGE: Middle Miocene, on the basis of macrofossil biostratigraphy. THICKNESS: about 30 m at type section.

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: peritidal; lithified, gypsiferous, shelly/skeletal, gray, white limestone

• ENVIRONMENT: Deposited in a sabhka environment according to Francis and Issawi (1977).
• GENERAL LITHOLOGY: grayish white, porous, gypseous and fossiliferous limestone at base, followed by grayish white crystalline gypsum beds with marly intercalations, porous fossiliferous limestone, and white chalky unfossiliferous limestone in the base of the section. LITHIFICATION: Lithified, not stated, but apparent from facies description.

Size class: macrofossils
