Queso Rallado, near Cerro Cóndor (Jurassic to of Argentina)

Also known as Queso Rayado

Where: Chubut, Argentina (43.4° S, 69.2° W: paleocoordinates 41.3° S, 28.1° W)

• coordinate based on unpublished field data

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Cañadón Asfalto Formation (Sierra de Olte Group), Middle Toarcian to Middle Toarcian (182.0 - 175.6 Ma)

• Usually given as Callovian, new work indicates that the Cañadón Asfalto Formation is considerably older, with dates ranging from the late Toarcian to the earliest Bathonian (Salani 2007; Cabaleri et al. 2010; Cuneo & Bowring 2010). Since the Queso Rallado locality does not represent the highest part of the formation, a Bathonian age can be exluded.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lacustrine; cherty/siliceous mudstone

• "The material is derived from a silicified mudstone within a series of lacustrine mudstones and limestones."

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils, microfossils
