Red Hot (Eocene of the United States)

Also known as Red Hot Truck Stop; CM locality 517; TF-M

Where: Lauderdale County, Mississippi (32.4° N, 88.7° W: paleocoordinates 34.6° N, 73.7° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: NP 9 zone, Tuscahoma Formation, Wasatchian (55.8 - 50.3 Ma)

• said to be early Wasatchian

•"near the top" of the formation

•"beds... almost certainly correlate with marine nannoplankton zone NP 9"

•the Tuscahoma underlies the Bashi Marl and both are in the Wilcox Group (see Hatchetigbee Bluff)

Environment/lithology: estuary or bay; glauconitic sandstone

• "glauconitic, estuarine channel sand"

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils

Collection methods: apparently includes omomyid specimen described by Beard and Tabrum 1991, whose stratigraphic provenance was uncertain but believed to be from the overlying Bashi Formation, and which certainly came from the same outcrop

Primary reference: K. C. Beard and A. R. Tabrum. 1991. The first early Eocene mammal from eastern North America; an omomyid primate from the Bashi Formation, Lauderdale County, Mississippi. Mississippi Geology 11(2):1-6 [J. Alroy/J. Alroy/M. Uhen]more details

Purpose of describing collection: taxonomic analysis
