• Early Pliocene. Esmeraldas beds, upper Onzole Formation.

Environment/lithology: deep-water; poorly lithified, tuffaceous, calcareous shale

• Shallow-water gravity-flows, which brought the Esmeraldas fauna into the deep water (1000 m) from shallow water, on the order of 75 m.
• Highly foraminiferal tuffaceous shale.
