Sta. 5295 - Raysor Bridge [Raysor Marl] (Pliocene of the United States)

Also known as Sta. 3991; Loc. 216

Where: Colleton County, South Carolina (33.1° N, 80.7° W: paleocoordinates 33.2° N, 80.0° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Raysor Marl Formation, Late/Upper Pliocene (3.6 - 2.6 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Raysor Marl, which presumably regionally unconformably overlies the Miocene Hawthorn Fm, and is overlain by the Duplin Marl. AGE: Late Pliocene; Miocene in text. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From bed 2 (3.5 ft thick) of the Raysor Bridge section.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; unlithified, blue marl

• ENVIRONMENT: Shallow marine, shelfal siliciclastic.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Marl consisting of shells in a dark-blue soft matrix. LITHIFICATION: Unlithified, assumed on the basis of age and facies description.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: original aragonite, original calcite
