Gastornithidae was named by Furbringer (1888).

It was assigned to Anseriformes by Zittel (1890); to Gastornithes by Hay (1902); to Diatrymiformes by Lambrecht (1933) and Wetmore (1960); to Galliformes by Mayr (2005); to Anserimorphae by Mayr (2007); to Gastornithiformes by Martin (1992) and Bourdon et al. (2014); and to Gastornithes by Worthy et al. (2017).
