Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
J. M. Callaway and J. A. Massare 1989 (Shastasaurus altispinus)"Diapophysial ridges of the dorsal vertebrae slender and greatly constricted at the point where the lower part of the ridge swings anteriorly; dorsal centra with average length/height ratio of 0.47; neural spines of dorsal vertebrae very thick transversely with almost circular cross sections except for blade-like anterior and posterior margins, relative height greater than in the other species, distal end hollowed by groovelike anteroposterior excavation; middle and posterior dorsal ribs broadheaded with rib-heads having two articular surfaces, the upper surface sharply turned away from the plane of the lower, the upper surface distinctly concave and more noticeably pitted than the lower; dorsal rib shafts almost triangulari n cross section proximally with slightly convex upper surface and grooved anteriorly and posteriorly, medial portion of shafts generally flattened; paddle elements ellipsoidal, leading edge of anterior elements sharply and deeply notched, central elements without notching or emargination, external edge of posterior elements emarginated, all elements with concave and roughened peripheral faces; teeth robust with slight lateral compression and with two sharp carinae on each tooth aligned parallel to the jaws."
M. W. Maisch and A. T. Matzke 2000"Pubis with almost closed obturator notch in posterior margin, proximal margin of pubis as wide as distal margin, posterior thoracal vertebral centra more than half as long as they are high."
