Tarija-1 (Pleistocene of Bolivia)

Where: Tarija, Bolivia (21.5° S, 64.8° W: paleocoordinates 21.6° S, 64.3° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• basin-level geographic resolution

When: Ensenadan mammal zone, Tarija Formation, Early/Lower Pleistocene (2.6 - 0.8 Ma)

• Boule and Thevenin (1920) suggested a Pliocene age for the Tarija Formation. Nevertheless, MacFadden et al. (1983) provided a geochronologic study of the Tarija Formation in the Tarija basin using magnetostratigraphy and radioisotopic dating. They showed that this formation spans a time interval between 1.0 Ma and 0.7 Ma.

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: fine channel fill; lithified, silty siltstone and lithified, sandy, conglomeratic sandstone

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils
