Mátraszőlős 1, ochre diatomitic mud layer (Miocene to of Hungary)

Also known as M1/s, Matraszolos, Rákóczi chapel section

Where: Nograd, Hungary (48.0° N, 19.7° E: paleocoordinates 47.5° N, 19.4° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Sajovolgyi Formation, MN 6 to MN 6 (13.7 - 11.1 Ma)

• The succession which includes the two fossiliferous beds belongs to the Sajóvölgyi Formation. It rests upon Badenian Leitha Limestone and is overlain by Pleistocene talus sediments. Its age is determined as Upper Badenian (Neogene land mammal zones MN 6 to MN 7-8) based on gastropod and mammal biostratigraphy. The yellowish diatomaceous bed (Mátraszőlős 1/sárga réteg, M1/s) is the upper of the two fossiliferous beds.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lacustrine; unlithified, diatomaceous, yellow mudstone

Size class: mesofossils

Preservation: original aragonite, original phosphate

Collected by Jánosz Hír et al. in 1998

• The site was discovered in spring 1998 and was excavated in summer of the same year. The excavation was conducted by the Municipal Museum of Pásztó and the entire material should be reposited there (at least the holotype of Gyraulus matraensis is).
