Mátraszőlős, 1997 Rákóczi chapel section test excavation (Miocene to of Hungary)

Also known as Matraszolos

Where: Nograd, Hungary (48.0° N, 19.7° E: paleocoordinates 47.5° N, 19.4° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Sajovolgyi Formation, MN 6 to MN 6 (13.7 - 11.1 Ma)

• The succession which includes the fossiliferous bed belongs to the Sajóvölgyi Formation. It rests upon Badenian Leitha Limestone and is overlain by Pleistocene talus sediments. Its age is determined as Upper Badenian (Neogene land mammal zones MN 6 to MN 7-8) based on gastropod and mammal biostratigraphy.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lacustrine; lithology not reported

• Fossils collected in the course of the 1997 test excavation are listed only by Vencel in his herpetological chapter. It is not clear where and in which stratigraphic level this excavation exactly took place. Also, it is not clear from which rocks the fossils come. In the introductory chapter of the paper there is mention of 700 kg of lignite clay that was unsuccessfully censused in 1997. It well may be, that the amphibians and reptiles listed by Vencel come from the same rocks.

Size class: mesofossils

Preservation: original phosphate

Collected in 1997

Collection methods: sieve,

• The material may be reposited in the Municipal Museum of Pásztó as is that of the nearby site Mátraszőlős 1 (see PBDB colls. no. 167497 and 167509)
