Nerezi, greenish clay with Planorbis (Miocene of Macedonia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Nerezi Formation, MN 11 (8.7 - 7.8 Ma)

• The Nerezi Formation includes sediments from the Late Sarmatian (according to fig. 4 by Dumurdzanov et al. 2004: 5 this stage of the Central Paratethys is to be correlated with the Khersonium of the Eastern Paratethys) to the Pontian and consists of three lithological layers (Dumurdzanov et al. 2004: 6). The coaly layers belong to the middle of the three partial-zones (Dumurdzanov et al. 2004: 7); as for their age, the Maeotium is indicated (this stage used for the zonation of the Eastern Paratethys correlates with the two upper thirds of the Pannonian of the Central Paratethys; it relates to the mammal-zonations Late Vallesian and Early Turolian, i.e. the MN-units 10 and 11 and the lowermost part of MN 12). Therefore, the upper coal-layer (below which the stratum with Triloba pappi n. sp. is located) cannot be dated to the Latest Maeotian (MN 12; correlated to the Latest Pannonian) but probably belongs to the Middle Maeotian. According to the correlations of the tables given by Steininger (1999: 15), this most probably corresponds to the European Mammal Zone MN 11 (= Earliest Turolian).
