Shiloh - Kirkwood Formation (Miocene of the United States)

Where: Cumberland County, New Jersey (39.5° N, 75.3° W: paleocoordinates 39.6° N, 70.9° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Shiloh Marl Member (Kirkwood Formation), Early/Lower Miocene (23.0 - 16.0 Ma)

• No lithostratigraphic details or stratigraphic relationships provided in text. Equivalent in age and slightly older than the Calvert Formaiton of Maryland and Virginia. Overlain by the Cohansey Sand with a time transgressive contact, Kirkwood Formation is Burdigalian-Langhian in age.

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; unlithified, argillaceous, silty mudstone and pebbly sandstone

• No geologic or paleoenvironmental data reported in text. Deposited in a sublittoral to nearshore environments
• No lithologic data reported in text. Clayey to silty mudrock, massive sand, and thin pebble lenses.

Size class: macrofossils

Reposited in the USNM

• Collections reposited in USNM and USGS collections. During the last century (written in 1942) when the marl industry was flourishing, there were numerous pits in this vicinity and fossils could easily be obtained from these diggings. According to Cook (1868) the material cam especially from the tributaries of Stow Creek. None of these pits are accessible at the present time except the Ayres Pits, which were reopened some 20 years ago.
