CH/f11 and CH/f213 - Kahuitara Tuff, Kahuitara Point (Cretaceous of New Zealand)

Also known as GS 6968

Where: New Zealand (44.3° S, 176.0° W: paleocoordinates 60.7° S, 132.8° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Kahuitara Tuff Formation (Pitt Island Group), Campanian (83.6 - 72.1 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: Pitt Island Group includes Kahuitara Tuff, Southern Volcanics, and an unamed Haumurian limestone. The Kahuitara Tuff rests unconformably upon the Tupuangi Formation and passes into the Southern Volcanics without disconformity. THICKNESS: Maximum thickness of 225 m. AGE: Haumurian. Other collections are from the early Haumurian, so to avoid orphaning the collection is placed into the Campanian (=early Haumurian)

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: transition zone or lower shoreface; lithified, pebbly, volcaniclastic, sandy tuff

• ENVIRONMENT: Inner shelf, open marine environment, near normal salinity, water depths ranging from 5-50 m.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Volcanic, sandy, pebbly grit, compact. LITHIFICATION: Presumably lithified as stated to be "compact"

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: COLLECTOR: Unknown abbreviations (HMW, GWG, HRK) and M. Laird. REPOSITORY: Presumably reposited in the New Zealand Geological Survey collections (now GNS Science), Lower Hutt, New Zealand
