S127/f574 - Livingstone [Livingstone Sand, Tapui Glauconitic Sst] (Eocene of New Zealand)

Also known as GS5655

Where: New Zealand (45.0° S, 170.6° E)

• Paleocoordinates: 46.5° S, 160.3° W (Wright 2013)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Livingstone Sand Member (Tapui Glauconitic Sandstone Formation), Bartonian (41.3 - 38.0 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From Livingstone Sand Mbr (tongue) of the Tapui Glauconitic Sand Fm, immediately overlying the Kauru Fm (Teurian), and overlain locally by Raki Siltstone (Kaiatan). AGE: Bortonian of Gage (1957) = late Lutetian-Bartonian, here assigned to the Bartonian. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: A tongue within the formation. It is uncertain whether the member underlies or grades laterally into the Incholme Glacuonitic Sand.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: offshore; lithified, fine-grained, pebbly, brown sandstone

• ENVIRONMENT: Deposited in still water beyond reach of strong wave action.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Brown sands with layers of fine, highly rounded quartz pebbles, concretionary. LITHIFICATION: Presumably lithified, based on facies description (detailed in Gage 1957) and age.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: cast, mold/impression, concretion

Reposited in the IGNS

Collection methods: quarrying,

• COLLECTOR: Collected by various authors, which may include: Marwick (1924-1944), Laws (1930-1941), and Powell (1942). REPOSITORY: New Zealand Geological Survey (now GNS Science, Lower Hutt, New Zealand).
